Al'arr was a child when her father joined with the Shadow Council to open the portal to Azeroth. She spied on her father and his comrades and studied magic without his knowledge. Unlike the warlocks from whom she gleaned her abilities, however, she regarded it with an analytical and rational mind. For her, magic became a science instead of a nebulous power granted by a higher, visibly capricious being.

When Ner'zhul attempted to open portals to other worlds, tearing Draenor apart in the process, Al'arr suddenly took ill due to the magical effects rampaging across the world. An emptiness swept over the orc's idle body and it soon began to "hunger" intensely. Without intent, she drained the life-force of another survivor. The act was an unpleasant experience for her, but for a brief moment the hunger ceased. The emptiness, however, came back more relentless and intense than before. She indulged in absorbing the energy of other survivors, but the more she fed, the shorter the hunger was appeased and the more relentless it became. Soon, the life-force of others was not enough for Al'arr, and instead she took to consuming the raw nether energies so commonplace in Outland.

Upon conducting numerous experiments on animals, unwilling subjects and even herself, she concluded that she had become a sort of wound in the Nether - which she simply called a void – that was slowly consuming her physical self and leeching away her life-force yet enhancing her destructive magic. Eventually her increasing power drew others, and she was found by a seeker of such things, who told her that he could teach her to feed her endless hunger; Al'arr accepted the offer of apprenticeship. The Void consumed her more and more each time she used spells, causing her hunger and power to grow dramatically, until she came to surpass her Master and to ultimately destroy him. In an attempt to control her appetites, she would travel to the largest concentrations of magical energies she could find, whereupon she sated the ever-growing hunger within her and further increased her power.

Al'arr had become so distorted by the Void and her hunger that her physical body had begun to erode. Knowing from her research that she would succumb to death if she did not act soon, Al'arr desperately sought a solution to her condition, researching the natures of body, spirit and the forces that bind and contain them. Ultimately, Al'arr ripped her spirit from her body and encased it in a specially-crafted set of armor she wore, thus allowing the Void to consume her useless body. Using dark magic, Al'arr was able to keep her robes, armor and cowl together, giving her some form and allowing her to use her powers as well as a weapon. Apart from that, however, she no longer has a physical form and has became simple, primitive intent.

She has learned some of the greatest of warlock and shadowmancer teachings, but such practices for her take the form of dependence. They make her stronger, but only for a time, and she must continue to feed upon life and magical energy to replenish her strength. For this reason, practitioners of magic and places rich in magic draw her. Her reach may eventually - in theory - extended to a point where she could feel magic users throughout the world to find locations that she will then cleanse entirely, killing everything touched by magic.

There is no strength in the hunger she possesses… and the will behind her power is a primal thing. And it devours her as she devours others — her mere presence kills all around her, slowly, feeding her. She is already dead, it is simply a question of how many she kills before she falls.
